"Maurice Eugene "Gene" Heneberry, 81, of
Bethany died at 5:30 am Monday, Dec. 27, 1999 in St. Mary's Hospital in
Decatur. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Thursday in Our Lady of
the Holy Spirit Church in Mt. Zion. Burial, with military rites, will be
in the St. Isidore Cemetery in Bethany with visitation from 6 to 8 tonight
(Wednesday) in the McMullin-Young funeral Home in Bethany with a prayer service
at 7:30 pm.
Mr. Heneberry was born in Bethany on July 23, 1918, the son
of Emmett D. and Agnes B. Morrison Heneberry. he graduated in 1936 from
Bethany High School, was employed by Brown Shoe Co. in Sullivan for five years,
served as president and secretary of Moultrie County Rural Youth, served 25
years on the board of the Bethany Grain Co., including nine of those years as
president, served three years as secretary for the Moultrie County Soil
and Water Dist. and served six years on the Moultrie County Regional Planning
Commission. He was a World War II Air Force veteran and was discharged as
a Master Sergeant of Military Police.
He served a one year term as president of the Moultrie County
Historical and Genealogical Society and three years as trustee, served several
years as supervisor of bin sites for A.S.C., worked five years for Coca Cola in
Dallas, Texas, was past commander of Bethany Legion Post 507 and past post
commander of Moultrie County, served several years on the Bethany Zoning Board,
was a member of the Our Lade of the Holy Spirit Church in Mr. Zion and retired
from farming after 36 years. Mr. Heneberry was an avid gardener and loved
to share his produce with friends. he married Doris M. Hoskins Aug. 27,
1966 in Dalton City, and she survives.
Other survivors include an aunt, Margaret Morrison of
Decatur, a brother, Joseph Heneberry of St. Louis, and sisters, Dorothy
Heneberry of Washington, D.C., and Maureen Nye of Albuquerque, N.M. He was
preceded in death by his parents. Memorials are suggested to Our Lady of
the Holy Spirit Church or the donor's choice."
