David S. Henneberry  1830-1918

Gravesite of David and Bridget in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Wilmington, IL.  (Note:  the name is spelled Henneberry and the gravestone is similar to many other family gravestones.)

   David Henneberry was born January 1, 1830 near Galbally, Ireland.  He was baptized in Christ the King Church in Galbally on January 8, 1830.  The godparents were Dennis Keane and Mary Berry.   David died on October 29, 1918 in Will County, IL and is buried in Mt Olivet Cemetery in Wilmington, IL.  The Wilmington Advocate of October 31, 1918 indicates David had a severe stroke.  Telegrams of the death were sent to Sister Camilla of Memphis, TN; John Henneberry of Perry, Iowa and his nephew David Henneberry of Bethany, IL

    David came to America aboard the Argyle on June 17, 1848 with his parents, David S. Henneberry I and Jane Cushing Henneberry and other family members.  Was in DuPage County, IL in 1849 and moved with family to Grundy County, IL by 1850.   The 1850 census lists David living with his mother Jane in Grundy County.  He is also listed in the 1850 census in Downers Grove Township, DuPage County, IL (page 42-576/585)  David, age 20, is listed as a farm laborer for Shubel Godfrey.  Several members of the Cushing family lived in DuPage County.  David married Bridget Reeves on  January 27, 1857 in Chicago IL. She was born 1830 in County Tipperary, and died 1906 in Will County.

    David purchased 80 acres in Grundy County on January 23, 1852.  He became a citizen on June 19, 1855 in Grundy County.  The sponsors were Daniel Hayes and his brother Thomas Henneberry.  David sold some Grundy County land to his brother, James Henneberry,  on May 20, 1857.  He married Bridget Reeves on January 27, 1857.   David owned land in Goose Lake Township, Grundy County.

    In the 1860 census, David was living in Felix Township, Grundy County with his wife Bridget and children; David age 2, twins John and Anna age seven months.

   1870 census Felix Township shows; David age 38, Bridget age 37, David age 13, Anna age 11, John age 9, Jane age 8, Christopher age 8, Mary age 4 and Agnes age 2.  It is believed the children attended school on the farm of Patrick Henneberry. 

   The 1880 census for Felix Township shows;  David age 54, Bridget age 50, Anna age 20, Mary age 14 and Agnes age 11.  In 1883, David bought a 160 acre farm in Wesley Township in Will County.  

The 1900 census shows David and Bridget living in County Road, Wilmington (282/285), Will County, IL ED 152, line 70.  After Bridget died in 1906, Agnes continued to live with David on County Road in Wilmington.  David played the flute in a band that played at many local events.

May 18, 1906:  The following will of the late Mrs. Bridget Hennebry has been filed.  Bridget Hennebry of Wilmington who died May 18, 1906, leaves her estate as follows:  To husband, David Hennebry, all real and personal property.  At his death her daughter, Agnes, is to hold all rights thereto.   David S. Hennebry is executor.

David S. married Anna Veronica Coveny on July 1, 1895 in Grundy County.  In the 1900 census, David and his family were living in Will County, IL.  By the 1920 census, David had died and his wife Anna and four children were living in Joliet, IL.

In the 1920 census was living in Morris, IL on Jefferson St. with his wife Margaret and daughter Florence, H516.  Christopher died April 6, 1930 in Wilmington, Will County, IL and is buried in Mt Olivet Cemetery.  Florence was born Jan. 31, 1903 in Grundy County and died Dec. 1985 in Centralia, IL

    Obituary: Morris Daily Herald, Monday, April 7, 1930:    Christopher F. Henneberry died at his home in  Wilmington early Saturday morning.  He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mr. Clarence K___; four sisters, Mrs. Jennie Daniher,  Agnes Henneberry of Joliet, Sister Camilla of Kentucky, Sister Ursula of  Chicago, and one  brother, John of Perry, Iowa.  Funeral services were held this morning at St. Rose's church,  Wilmington followed by internment in Mt Olivet cemetery.

  Elizabeth, the first wife of Christopher is buried in Lot 139 Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
                      She died August 23, 1899 at age 23.

October 21, 1910:  David S. Henneberry, a former prominent resident of Wesley township, died at his home in Joliet Saturday afternoon last of typhoid fever.  Mr. Henneberry was born in Grundy County, December 21, 1857, but had spent most of his life in Wesley.  He is survived by his wife and five children.  His remains were brought to this city Tuesday morning and the funeral was held from St. Rose's Church, mass being celebrated by Dean Dunne of St. Patrick's Church, Joliet as celebrant, Rev. O'Brien of St. Patrick's Church, Joliet as deacon and Rev. P. O'Dwyer of St. Rose's Church.  Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery.
