McGowan Family

"McGowan is a Scottish and Irish Patronymic name from the Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Gobhann (Scottish) and MacGabhann (Irish) both from occupational nicknames for the village smith. It is also occasionally derived in Scotland from MacOwein , a patronymic form of the given name Owen or Ewen. Variations include McGowing, McGowen, McGoune, Magowan, McAgown, McEgown, McIroine , and Gowans."

Fenton McGowan (born 1821 in Ireland - died 1893 in Decatur, Illinois)  
    married Catherine Elizabeth Lawler (born 1835 - died 1911 in Decatur, IL)
    both buried in Calvary Cemetery in Decatur, IL.

Mary: b. 1857, d. Sep 28, 1918.  Married Patrick Kilkeary, b. 1842 in County Clare, Ireland, arrived in America at age nine.  d. March 23, 1917.
  Children:  Mary, John, Katherine, Thomas, Elizabeth, Edward F., William P.
Elizabeth:  b. Sep 25, 1858, d. April 29, 1935.  Married James L. ??.       Children:  Thomas, John, Katherine, Mamie, Fenton.
Thomas:  b. Nov 27, 1861, d. Aug 20, 1848.  Married Elizabeth A. Dunn; b. Dec 8, 1870, d. April 14, 1919.  Both buried in Calvary Cemetery, Decatur, IL

 

Elizabeth (Lizzie) Dunn wife of Thomas McGowan.  Elizabeth was the daughter of Peter Dunn and Mary Dempsey Dunn.

  • Thomas F. Jr.: b. Feb 14, 1895 d. Dec. 22, 1915
  • Katherine:  1893-1947,  married Anthony Irwin Vollmer 1893-1966.  Anthony was the son of Phillip (Jake) Vollmer and Ellen Foley.  Ellen was the daughter of John Henry Foley and Margaret Henneberry Foley.
  • Mary Elizabeth: married Anthony Joseph Reif of Springfield, Illinois
  • Virgil B.: attorney
  • Edwin C.:  medical doctor.  married Anne Russell
  • Emmett J.: DDS. married Ruth Donovan.  Emmett was the dentist for many of the Dunn, Kinney and Henneberry families (including your webmaster) in Decatur, IL.  
  • Ellen (Nellie): died Sep 14, 1979.  married James Talbot
  • Elizabeth (Tootie): married Francis A. White

Tom McGowan, Hotel Owner Dies in Hospital
Thomas McGowan, 86, one of the owners and operators of the Kraft Hotel, 555 North Front street, died at 11:15 am today in St. Mary's hospital where he had been a patient for the last three months.
Mr. McGowan who was associated with the late Edward F. Dunn and the late George Kraft in building and operating the hotel had been active in the business from its construction in 1907 until about six months ago.
Mr. McGowan was born in St. Louis, Mo., Nov., 27, 1861, the son of Fenton and Catherine McGowan.  He had made his home in Decatur since graduating from the Christian Brothers college in St. Louis when he was a young man.  
He was married to Elizabeth Dunn of Decatur, Oct. 19, 1892.  She preceded him in death, April 15, 1917.  He leaves three sons, Dr. E. McGowan and Attorney Virgil McGowan of Decatur and Dr. E. C. McGowan, Chicago; three daughters, Mrs. Nellie Talbott and Mrs. Elizabeth White of Decatur and Mrs. Mary Reis, Chicago and nine grandchildren.  The body was taken to Moran & Sons funeral home.  Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
(Note: Elizabeth Dunn's uncles, Nicholas and Charles Laux owned the St. Nicholas Hotel in Decatur.  Edward Dunn was the brother of Elizabeth.)

Decatur Herald:  Monday, April 21, 1980: daughter of Elizabeth Dunn McGowan.

Mrs. Francis Elizabeth Jane "Tootie" McGowan White of 47 Montgomery Place died 3:50 am in St. Mary's Hospital.  Mass of the Resurrection will be 11 am Tuesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church.  No visitation.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.  J. J. Moran & Sons Funeral home is in charge.  Memorials, donor's choice.
Daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Dunn McGowan.  She was a member of Country Club of Decatur, served on the board of local chapter of American Cancer Society, Webster Hall and Illinois Women's Golf Association.  She was a former teacher at Centennial Junior High School.  She married Francis A. "Smock" White.  Surviving are her husband and brother, Virgil McGowan of Decatur.  Three brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.
