Bresnan/Bresnahan Family

Visit the Site Menu for more information on the Bresnan Family.  St. Isidore & Sacred Heart Church and St. Isidore Cemetery.  The first Catholic Mass in Moultrie County was held in the house of Edward.  Edward Bresnan was born in the parish of Pallasgrean, near Herbertstown, County Limerick, Ireland.  Herbertstown is about ten miles northwest of Galbally where the Foley's, Henebry's and other families resided.

(O)BROSNAN BROSNAN

     "Essentially a Kerry surname. The 1901 census shows that there were 264 Brosnan families in Kerry at that time. The 66 births registered for the name in the most recent year for which detailed statistics are available were in Munster and 55 of them in Co. Kerry. In Irish it is Ó Brosnacháin, possibly derived from the Kerry place-name Brosna; . Earlier anglicized forms, Brosnaghan etc., preserved the three syllables of the original. There are many variant spellings of the name on record in modern birth registrations including Bresnahan, Bresnane, Bresnehan, Bresnihan, Brosnahen, Brosnahin, Brosnihan, Brusnahan, Brusnehan and Brusnihan; Bresteneharke occurs in the 1611 Inquisitions.  The earliest reference to the name I have met is for the year 1333, not however in Kerry but in east Munster, when the betaghs on a manor estate near Clonmel included O'Brosnanes."  Source:  More Irish Families, Edward MacLysaght, Dublin, 1996, page 43.

Note:  It is probable that John Bresnahan & Mary Cronin are the parents of Edmond.  Edmond named his first son John and the first daughter Mary.  Irish tradition: the first son was named after the father's father.  There is a strong probability that the grandfather of Edmond was also named John Bresnahan.
